King John was a frequent visitor to the Castle due to his liking for hunting. I wonder what he would think of the extension within the Second Court of the Gatehouse Tower which is the first since the 13th Century
The external wall of the extension is built over the base of the Eastern flank wall of the Medieval gate passage recreating the original doorway deta
Notice the smooth render around the doorway prior to outer skin of stone. No cement or mortar plasticiser was used Completed doorway
The Castle is one of the few ancient monument under the control of English Heritage which is still habitable
